Trump’s divisive Mount Rushmore message — no attempt to unite
--
“In front of Mount Rushmore for an Independence Day celebration, President Trump delivered a dark and divisive speech on Friday. His speech wiped out the nation’s values and history.”
During his speech, Trump embellished the truth,
“Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values and indoctrinate our children. Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our founders, deface our most sacred memorials and unleash a wave of violent crime in our cities.”
No mention of the pandemic’s resurgence, despite “53,000 cases,” reported that day. Trump did not discuss BLM concerns or George Floyd’s death at all. Trump missed his opportunity to unite a country currently divided by the pressing issues of racism and the pandemic.
As The New York Times wrote, this speech proved just how “increasingly disconnected Trump is from the intense concern among Americans about the health crisis gripping the country. Mr. Trump has consistently played down the pandemic concerns claiming that young people ‘get better much easier and faster,’ and that the virus will ‘just disappear.’”
“Throughout his presidency, Trump has tried to bend events to his will, often using social media to drive home his alternate version of reality and, thanks to the power of repetition and the loyal support of his base, sometimes succeeding.” Yet, as his re-election campaign is “struggling and unfocused,” his typical tactics, especially on a national holiday weekend, harmed more than helped.
As presidential historian Michael Beschloss commented, “I don’t think it will work because what he is trying to do is pretend that it is better than it is.” Beschloss added that “Most presidents in history have understood that when they appear at a national monument, it’s usually a moment to act as a unifying chief of state, not a partisan divider, the way Trump did.”
Trump is a clueless, dangerous, narcissistic President. He fails to grasp the severity of the COVID-19 crisis, with the U.S. now banned from travel to the E.U and the COVID controversy of schools re-opening safely this Fall. Let’s defeat Trump in this upcoming election! We can reverse his 2016 electoral college victory. Do you vote in one of the five crucial electoral college swing states — Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina or Wisconsin? We need your vote against Trump in this upcoming election to beat him. Let’s flip 38 electoral votes!
