Former national security advisor John Bolton wrote in an outline for his book, that Trump withheld aid to Ukraine until the country claimed that it would investigate former Vice President and current Democratic candidate, Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Speculation is that President Trump wanted to influence the 2020 election.

In looking at the details of his book Bolton says that Trump told him in August that he wanted to cease sending $400 million in congressionally approved military assistance to Ukraine until they agreed to help him find dirt on Bidden.

Trump immediately denied Bolton’s story saying that Bolton “never complained about this,” about withholding the military aid. Trump went on to discuss how freezing the military aid was separate from his request that Ukraine investigate the Biden’s.

If Bolton’s story is proved true, then Trump will have committed a quid pro quo. Quid pro quo is a Latin expression that translates to goods of services. Normally, a quid pro quo is when one transfer is dependent on the other. To put it simply, quid pro quo means that there is giving and taking involved, one favor is completed in exchange for another.

In this scenario, Trump’s quid pro quo is extremely illegal because it proves that he is tampering with the upcoming 2020 elections.

Why would we want to re-elect someone that does not play fair? Why elect Trump will go to great depths to win, even if it is illegal? We should want a president who wants to play fair and who follows the law. If we elect a president who does not fight fairly and breaks the law, why should we trust them to fight fairly in times when our country needs it? Why should we trust them to make just decisions regarding laws, when they do not even abide by the law themselves?

In looking at Bolton’s claims, there is even more evidence that Trump did commit a quid pro quo. Bolton stated that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo privately said that former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani’s claim that the U.S ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, was corrupt, was not only false, but also lacked substantial evidence. Bolton also wrote that he expressed concerns regarding Giuliani with Attorney General William Barr when Trump made the phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July. Bolton claims that he was the one that told Barr that he was mentioned in Trump’s call.

According to the Washington Post, Bolton also has Trump’s exact quotations during the phone in an “unpublished manuscript that has been circulating around with Bolton’s former associates.” The New York Times reported that this manuscript holds evidence, but is similar to what Bolton will say if he testifies against Trump.

Bolton claims he would testify if subpoenaed, but as of late Senate Republicans have neglected to call any witnesses or bring any additional evidence. It is clear to everyone that Bolton has evidence, and that ideally, the Senate should not wait until his book is published to hear Bolton testify.

It brings up the idea that can we truly trust the Trump administration and the current Congress if they are not willing to look at all the facts and evidence? It is not easy to decide to remove a leader from office, and it needs to be handled with more seriousness as opposed to dismissing witnesses.

Again if the Trump administration is not willing to do thorough research on this case, why should we trust them when other serious cases arise that call for tough decisions?

What do you think of the idea of Bolton testifying? What are your thoughts on the impeachment trial? We would love to hear your opinions.
